Capital One Cup: Sunderland, Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea all triumph

Sunderland began life after Paolo Di Canio with a comfortable Capital One Cup victory over Peterborough as Tottenham thrashed Aston Villa and Manchester City romped to a 5-0 victory against Wigan.
There were also third round victories for Chelsea, Southampton, West Ham, Fulham, Hull City, Norwich, Leicester and Burnley on a busy night of cup football.

Sunderland caretaker boss Kevin Ball oversaw a 2-0 victory at home to Peterborough thanks to goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Valentin Roberge, with the recalled Lee Cattermole excellent in midfield.
Chelsea enjoyed a routine 2-0 success at Swindon as Jose Mourinho turned to a number of the fringe players in his star-studded squad, with Juan Mata setting up Fernando Torres before substitute Ramires, on for the injured Marco van Ginkel, struck again before the interval.

Manchester City destroyed Wigan 5-0 in a repeat of last season's FA Cup final with Edin Dzeko opening the scoring before the floodgates opened with Stevan Jovetic bagging a second-half brace and Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas also on target.

Moses exclusive

"Luis will go out there and score goals. That is what he loves to do" - Victor Moses tells Sky Sports about Suarez's return, that bite, Liverpool's plans to silence Old Trafford, and a World Cup dream
Victor Moses is in a unique position in Liverpool's squad. The on-loan winger was at Chelsea last season which meant he was an opposition player on the day of Luis Suarez's infamous and shocking bite on Branislav Ivanovic.

Moses was an 83rd minute substitute in the game at Anfield, which ended in a 2-2 draw as Suarez scored a late injury-time equaliser, and so he was on the bench at the time of the 65th minute incident. But there was no escaping the resulting fallout, which stunned the football world.
Uruguay international Suarez was handed a 10-match ban by the Football Association and has consequently not played competitively for his club since 21st April. However, in Wednesday's Capital One Cup third round game at Liverpool's bitter rivals, Manchester United, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1HD from 7pm, he will again be available for selection for the first time in more than 150 days.
For Moses, it might be a slightly strange situation to now be at Liverpool after his transfer deadline day loan having experienced the Chelsea reaction to Suarez's inexcusable bite on Ivanovic. But the 22-year-old insists there is no grudge with his new club-mate after getting to know him in training over recent weeks.

Moyes admonishes United after 4 – 1 defeat by City

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Manchester United manager David Moyes said he upbraided his players after their crushing 4-1 derby defeat at Manchester City and called for an immediate improvement in their performances.

The Scot had a torrid experience in his first Manchester derby, as a Sergio Aguero brace and goals from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri gave City a victory reminiscent of their seismic 6-1 win at Old Trafford in 2011.

David MoyesIt was United’s second defeat of the season, leaving them five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal in eighth place, and Moyes admitted that he had vented his spleen at the final whistle.

Mourinho speaks on Mikel’s goal

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has applauded John Obi Mikel for his sterling performance in the Blues’ 2-0 win over Fulham last Saturday at StamfordBridge to record three victories in three home matches.

Mourinho said the Nigerian international gave his side the needed balance.

“Good for him, good for us. I think it is good for his confidence. And I think people enjoyed seeing John (Obi Mikel) score a goal.’

“The goal was a shot in a set-piece, in a corner, a rebound, the finishing was good and he was in the position, but the important thing for me is he played a good game, he gave balance and stability.

“He kept very good control of the game, so I am happy with the way John is playing,” Mourinho concluded.

Enyeama’s one of Africa’s best goalkeepers – FIFA instructor

Abuja – Louis Crayton, an instructor with the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), on Tuesday in Abuja rated Super Eagles’ goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama as one of the best goalkeepers Africa has.

Crayton gave the rating in an interview with reporters, on the sidelines of the FIFA Member Associations (MA) Goalkeeping Course at the Abuja National Stadium.

He said Nigeria was one of the few countries which have goalkeepers playing for foreign clubs, and Enyeama has also proven himself to be one of Africa’s finest.

“Nigeria is one of the countries which have goalkeepers in foreign clubs, such as Lille FC of France where Enyeama is, and Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel where Austin Ejide is.

AU vows to crush Shebab militants

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) – The African Union vowed Tuesday to press on with its fight against Al Qaeda-linked Shebab militants in Somalia following a deadly siege in Kenya that is now in its fourth day.

“Our resolve is to fight now more than ever before,” the deputy head of the AU’s executive branch, Erastus Mwencha, told AFP.

Shebab has claimed responsibility for the bloody attack at Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall, which started Saturday and has so far left at least 65 people dead and about 200 injured.

Mwencha said the bloody siege underscores the difficulty of fighting Shebab rebels, whose threat extends beyond the borders of Somalia.

Strike will improve education sector – ASUU

Lagos – The President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge, said on Tuesday that the current strike by lecturers of public universities in the country was a sacrifice for better things to come.

Fagge told Journalists in Lagos that unless the deficits in the education sector, especially the university system, were addressed once and for all, there would be no development.

Lecturers, under the aegis of ASUU, had on June 30 embarked on what it had described as comprehensive, total and indefinite strike in public universities across the country.

The lecturers are asking for the implementation of some aspects of an agreement they jointly entered into with the Federal government in 2009.

PDP CRISIS :Rebel govs frustrating peace moves

THE crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP deepened, yesterday, ahead of the peace meeting scheduled for last night to resolve the lingering dispute in the party.

Presidency officials expressed frustration that the seven rebel governors have perfected plans to cripple the peace process.

A top Presidency official told Vanguard, last night, that despite the fact that the President is in a reconciliatory mood, the rebel governors have refused to deal honestly with him and leaders of the party.

The official cited instances where the rebel governors would be invited to meetings but instead of attending they would divide themselves with some attending and others staying away.

The official gave as example the last peace process chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He said that when the meeting was on the verge of a breakthrough, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, who stood for the dissenting governors said that he could not speak for his colleagues, stating that he would have to go back and consult them.

Syria Upstages 9/11

PRESIDENT Barack Obama is in a bind. He has vowed to punish Syria’s President Bashar Al Assad, for allegedly unleashing poisonous gases on his people – many are unconvinced.

The 12th anniversary of September 11, America’s excuse for attacking spots round the world since 2001, is taking a back seat.

The war drums are beating again. Washington is angry and the world is not at ease. Russia and China are not in support, so are traditional allies Britain and France.

Germany is lukewarm. Americans at home and abroad wonder if regime change in Syria is a worthy enterprise. It is a war that may produce another anti-American regime.

Their stance has played a major role in the deal that Russia has broken to put Syria’s chemical weapons under international supervision. Obama would seek Congress’ approval and can only strike Syria if it reneges on the deal.

September 11 marked one of the most horrendous attacks on people. Nineteen young Arabs rammed four passenger planes into the Pentagon, America’s seat of military power and the World Trade in New York, killing 2,996 and injuring 6,000. Syria is upstaging this year’s memorials.

ASUU: Emulate Benue teachers

THE on-going strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has become a source of concern as it has brought untold pain to parents and guardians whose children and wards are idling away when they are supposed to be in classrooms.

ASUU wants government to implement a 2009 Joint Agreement it entered with government. Among other things, ASUU says university lecturers are being owed N80billion to which government did not dispute. The union also wants 26 percent annual budgetary allocation to the education sector out of which it wants 50 percent to be allocated to universities.

Government on its side has released N30billion with a promise to pay the remaining in instalments. The government has in addition set aside N400billion for Infrastructural development in the universities out of which it has released N100billion bringing to a total of N130billion.

While making these offers, the Chairman of the Universities Needs Implementation Committee, Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State assured ASUU of government’s determination to implement the content of the 2009 agreement and pleaded with the union to call off its strike. But ASUU’s president, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge, has sworn to continue until their demands are met. But there is a need for ASUU and its members to borrow a leaf from teachers in Benue State and show some level of understanding in dealing with this matter.

7 Ways To Make A Woman Proud Of Your Relationship

1. Plan Your Meals Together And Split Up The Work
Cooking at home is one of the simple joys of a relationship. It also saves money and is healthier than eating out. Take meal preparation to the next level by sharing the work as a couple. Planning your meals is a big upgrade to your quality of life. Deciding at the start of the week what you’ll be eating for the next few nights makes shopping and meal-planning a breeze. After that, divvy up the work — one of you can do the shopping while the other handles the cooking. If you’re both game, you can swap roles the next week.

2. Use Your Holidays To Make New Memories
Holiday time is often a period of deep relaxation while spending time with loved ones. But you can benefit yourself and your relationship by having a plan to get the most out of your holidays. Rather than spending the time deciding what to do, have a plan for the holiday together. Even better, come up with — or look up online — some fun holiday traditions you can introduce. No matter how small or silly an idea may seem, once it’s happened two or three times in a row, it will become a tradition and something you look forward to each year.

3. Make Plans
Planning is at the core of all self-improvement. Most self-improvement is, after all, planning — deciding on a plan to get yourself from where you are to where you want to be. Learning the skill of planning and making planning a part of your life is key to improving oneself: moving out of the passive, reactive state, and making decisions about your future and how to get yourself there. So, start planning. Plan your weekend, plan for next year, plan for the future, plan for your life. And bring your partner in at every step you can. The more you work out ideas for what’s next for both of you, the better you spend the most precious resource you have as a couple: time.

Nigrian Army Kills 50 Boko Haram Members In Their Stronghold

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) – Nigerian soldiers backed by air support have tracked down and killed 50 members of Islamist sect Boko Haram in the sect’s northeastern stronghold, an army spokesman said on Saturday.

Suspected members of Boko Haram killed 20 people in two attacks late on Wednesday and early on Thursday in the villages of Gajiram and Bulabulin Ngabura in the northeastern Borno state, local residents said.

“Troops pursued the terrorists to their camps and with air support about 50 terrorists were killed in a shoot-out,” army spokesman Sagir Musa told reporters in Maiduguri.

Boko Haram, which wants to impose sharia law in northern Nigeria, and other splinter Islamist groups, are the biggest threat to stability in Africa’s top oil exporter.

Obama warns against Syria inaction, seeks EU support

 - President Barack Obama on Saturday warned US lawmakers against turning “a blind eye” to Syria, as Washington sought to muster European Union support for military strikes against the Damascus regime.

Fresh from a G20 summit in Saint Petersburg where Obama failed to win over world leaders to his cause, the president urged Congress to authorise an intervention over President Bashar al-Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to images like the ones we’ve seen out of Syria,” Obama said in his weekly address.

“That’s why I call on members of Congress, from both parties, to come together and stand up for the kind of world we want to live in; the kind of world we want to leave our children and future generations.”

Congress reconvenes on Monday and Obama is set to address the nation on Tuesday about a possible US response to the August 21 attack that left hundreds dead on the outskirts of Damascus.

Faced with a war-weary US public and little international support, Obama is bracing for an uphill battle to convince American lawmakers to back military action against Assad’s regime.

Syria dares Obama, says he is ‘confused'

DAMASCUS (AFP) – Obama is ‘hesitant and confused’: Syrian deputy FM

Meanwhile the decision by President Barack Obama to take a step back from an imminent strike on Syria puts all eyes on Vladimir Putin’s G20 summit where the Russian and US leaders will push for global support of their divergent policies.

The Kremlin has said that Syria is not on the official agenda of the summit to be hosted by Russia in Saint Petersburg on Thursday and Friday. But with both Moscow and Washington keen to use it as a platform to discuss a potential US-led strike against the Syrian regime, the issue is quickly becoming the elephant in the room.

The two-day meeting, to be attended by the Group of 20 heads of state or government, will also likely be the last chance for a face-to-face debate over possible military intervention before it is voted on in the US Congress, due to come back from recess on September 9.
